Top five releases this year

With the return of gigs and concerts this year we have been spoilt for choice with new releases. From Foo Fighters to blur, here’s a low down on all the tracks you DON’T want to miss from 2023…

  1. Foo Fighters - But Here We Are

This release came after the tragic passing of beloved Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins. But Here We Are is a testimony to the friendship between Hawkins and the band, which makes for an emotional but powerful listening experience. The lyrics obviously play homage to the late drummer, tracks such as The Teacher and Rescued ring true to this. I’ll be honest, this album makes me cry like a baby every time I listen to it. Under you and The Glass are great tracks to start off with, just make sure you have a box of tissues to hand!

2.) Royal blood - Pull Me Through and Mountains At Midnight

After 2 years of silence, Royal Blood have absolutely killed it with this new release! Pull Me Out represents a new age in style for the two. Featuring a piano led, relaxed sound, it seems Kerr and Thatcher are succeeding in exploring a new style. Known for their guitar and drum setup, the introduction of keyboards in their music is a huge step for both the band’s musical approach and brand. However, the pair have stayed true to their catchy, bassy style in Mountains At Midnight and it has certainly paid off. I’ve got to say, I reckon this is the best release we have seen this year from an established band. Mountains At Midnight is certainly worth a listen while out and about - especially if you’re looking to walk like a supervillain.

3.) Adolescents - Caesar Salad Days

This new release brings a much needed punk revival to the mainstream music scene. Adolescents are one of few bands who have remained consistently active since their ascension onto the music scene in 1980. It seems their consistency has served them well in Caesar Salad Days which revisits the band’s classic songs. Brats in Battalions is a great, high energy track which showcases the simple, but effective, tools used by those on the scene during the 70s.

  1. Blur - The Ballad of Darren

This much anticipated album has brought a brand new, slower sound to Blur’s discography. The album is based on the band’s long-time security guard, Darren ‘Smoggy’ Evans, who has been supportive of Albarn’s signwriting. The Narcissist is a powerful track, not to be missed. It details the singer’s struggles with addiction and how his fans' support helped him overcome his struggles with LSD.
